Position Summary

The University of Indianapolis seeks applications for Dean of the Shaheen College of Arts and Sciences (SCAS). This full-time, 12-month administrator provides overall financial, curricular, and personnel leadership and direction to SCAS in accordance with the mission and strategic plan of the University of Indianapolis. Reporting directly to the Executive Vice President and Provost, the Dean represents the College on the Provost’s Council. Academic rank and credit toward tenure will be negotiated based on academic experience. Position is open January 2018; this start date can be negotiated for the ideal candidate.

The Shaheen College of Arts and Sciences is comprised of undergraduate and graduate programs in sixteen departments encompassing the Fine Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Mathematics and Natural Sciences and the newly formed R.B. Annis School of Engineering. The SCAS dean also oversees the Center for Service Learning & Community Engagement, an associate dean and an assistant dean with responsibilities for interdisciplinary programs.

Responsibilities include development of the operating plan and budget; managing and overseeing unit resources including faculty load, and support staff; encouraging and supporting faculty development, including initiatives related to faculty scholarship and community engagement; leading school initiatives related to student learning, general education offerings, innovative pedagogical practices, new curricular options, and outcomes assessment and accreditation for all academic programs in SCAS; serving as the official representative of, and spokesperson for SCAS; supervising the hiring and performance reviews of all personnel in SCAS; supervising, conducting and fostering scholarly work; seeking opportunities for and overseeing SCAS faculty efforts in securing external funding; collaborating with the University Advancement team in donor cultivation and solicitation; and engaging in strategic planning for the College and the broader University community.

Required Education/Experience/Skills (Minimum Qualifications)

An earned terminal degree from an accredited institution of higher education; a record of successful teaching, scholarship, and professional engagement to merit senior rank in a discipline within SCAS; demonstrated success in administrative and/or academic leadership; personal and professional integrity; ability to engage various constituent groups in strategic initiatives; demonstrated commitment to and/or evidence of successful initiatives that are inclusive; ability to articulate the purpose and value of a liberal arts education and its role in professional programs; and strong organizational and communication skills. Must demonstrate commitment to diversity and inclusion, and must have achieved the rank of Associate Professor at an accredited institution.

Desired Education/Experience/Skills (Additional Qualifications)

Experience with academic program development and curriculum management; knowledge of assessment and accreditation practices; experience in leadership at the chair’s level or higher; ability to represent the concerns of the College to internal and external audiences; ability to secure grants and engage in other fundraising activities; and ability to cultivate and maintain ties with alumni.
