Position Summary

The University of Indianapolis is soliciting applications from qualified candidates for the position of Dean for the School of Education (SOE). This full-time, 12-month, administrator reports directly to the Executive Vice President and Provost and provides overall financial, curricular, and personnel leadership and direction for the SOE in accordance with the mission and strategic plan of the University of Indianapolis. The SOE is comprised of undergraduate and graduate programs for initial teacher licensure as well as graduate programs for advanced licensure. Academic rank and credit toward tenure will be negotiated based on academic experience. Position is available in January 2018; this start date can be negotiated for the ideal candidate.

We seek a creative, energetic individual who will build on the School’s strong record of success. UIndy has a rich history of teacher education and principal preparation, and has been at the forefront in adoption of best practices and programs in these areas. The SOE offers nationally recognized undergraduate programs leading to initial licensure in elementary, middle, and high school as well as all-grade education. Features of the program include classes taught on-site at diverse local schools, field experiences at all levels, and two placements of student teaching. To ensure that graduates are exceptionally prepared, the program integrates literacy and special needs instruction throughout the curriculum and offers additional licenses in both areas. At the graduate level, innovative programs in Curriculum and Instruction, Principal Leadership, and Master of Arts of Teaching prepare professionals to teach and lead in 21st century schools. The SOE is accredited by NCATE and is in the process of CAEP accreditation with a site visit scheduled for November 2017.

The dean will work collaboratively with the Executive Director of the University’s Center of Excellence in Leadership of Learning (CELL). CELL, created in 2001, is recognized nationally as a leader in education reform for its work in bringing school districts throughout Indiana together with their local business and community leaders to set high expectations for student learning, redesign school structures, and reshape instructional methods to produce high achievement and graduation rates. In connection with that work, CELL has introduced proven educational models to Indiana, and now is leading statewide networks to provide support and expertise to Indiana communities, establishing New Tech and Early College high schools in particular.

The School of Education was the first in the state to develop a transition to teaching program and became the only private institution among just four Indiana universities selected in 2009 for the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation’s (Indiana Teaching Fellowship program), designed to put highly talented math and science teachers into secondary schools. Because of the success of this innovative post-baccalaureate program, the School of Education in collaboration with the Shaheen College of Arts & Sciences was just awarded a $1.2M NSF grant through the Robert Noyce Scholarship program to continue its work in developing STEM teachers in UIndy’s Teach (STEM)3 program launching Summer 2017. Elementary and Secondary Education programs will start highly revised curricula that focus on a richer experience through clinical-based teaching. The principal preparation program, iLEAD, continues its success in developing building level leaders.

Primary duties and responsibilities of the Dean include leading initiatives related to student learning, innovative pedagogical practices, new curricular options, and outcomes assessment for all academic programs in the School; serving as the official representative of and spokesperson for the School to internal and external groups, including university administration, area school systems, legislators, community leaders, as well as national and specialized professional association accrediting bodies. In addition the Dean provides oversight and management of unit resources including faculty load, facilities, and support staff; supervises the hiring and performance reviews of all personnel in the School; is available to, encourages and mentors faculty; and supports faculty development, including initiatives related to faculty scholarship and community engagement. The Dean is responsible for the development of the operating plan and budget. The dean is responsible for seeking opportunities for and overseeing SOE faculty efforts in securing external funding, collaborating with the University Advancement team in donor cultivation and solicitation, and engaging in strategic planning for the School and the broader University community.

Required Education/Experience/Skills (Minimum Qualifications)

An earned doctorate from an accredited institution of higher education; demonstrated success at chair level or higher in a university setting; personal and professional integrity; vision, creativity, and the ability to engage various constituent groups in strategic initiatives; and strong organizational and communication skills. Must demonstrate commitment to diversity and inclusion, and must have achieved the rank of Associate Professor at an accredited institution.

Desired Education/Experience/Skills (Additional Qualifications)

Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate a record of success in creating and implementing innovative models of student learning; experience in creating and facilitating successful partnerships with P-12 schools; P-12 teaching experience; ability to lead the expansion of technology resources for the school; history of collaborative team building; ability to engage with local and state leaders to promote policies and practices that increase student access to and success in learning; a record of successful teaching, scholarship, and professional engagement; experience in curricular/program development; knowledge of alternative teacher preparation programs; working knowledge of national accreditation processes and standards; a history of leadership in grant acquisition as principal investigator and other fundraising activities; and the ability to engage with alumni and the local community
